Beckham took home the American Idol crown as the winner of Season 19, but admitted that the moment he was named the victor was “bittersweet.”

In an interview with Access Hollywood, Beckham not only spoke highly of Spence’s musical talents, but of the friendship the two developed as well. “I love Willie,” he said. “We hang out outside of the competition, you know, we’re tight."

Beckham and Spence had an intimate exchange as the two made their way to the stage to find out who the Idol winner would be.

"So when we was walking up there, I told him, I said, ‘Man, I hope you win. I just really, from the bottom of my heart, I just hope you take this home, dude, and … it broke my heart a little bit that it wasn’t him, because, I mean, you see these people work so hard and put in so much hard work, and they deserve it, man. They all deserve it."

Beckham admitted he experienced a wave of emotion as he was on stage watching clips of Spence’s Idol journey.

"Seeing him sit there on the soundstage and watching his momma cry while she’s hugging him," Beckham said, "I had to stop watching it, because I get emotional."
