The Celtics could still use another ball-handler, and while Damian Lillard remains the sexiest name on that front, Boston also has to take a look at more realistic options.
In that vein, the C's were reportedly one of the teams that attended a private workout for veteran point guard John Wall on Sunday.
The 32-year-old Wall is currently a free agent and is looking to show he still has something in the tank. He was an All-Star five straight years from 2013-18 during his prime with the Washington Wizards, but has played just 74 games total over the last four years.
Wall missed the entire 2019-20 season with a ruptured Achilles and also sat out the entire 2021-22 season. He returned to the court last season and played 34 games for the Los Angeles Clippers, averaging 11.4 points and 5.2 rebounds in 22 minutes per game while mostly coming off the bench.
Wall then got traded to the rebuilding Houston Rockets in February and subsequently waived. He did not sign with another team and sat out the remainder of the season.
Wall obviously would not be a starter for the Celtics or just about any other team at this point, but if they do think he has anything left, he could be a decent second- or third-string point guard option, assuming he's willing to accept a smaller role in order to play for a contender.
The Celtics did recently sign Dalano Banton to provide some guard depth behind Derrick White, Malcolm Brogdon and Payton Pritchard, but he'll likely land even further down the roster than Wall would. It also remains possible that Boston still deals away Brogdon, who was reportedly heading to the Clippers last month in a Kristaps Porzingis trade before Los Angeles killed the deal and Brad Stevens shipped out Marcus Smart to Memphis instead.
