Getting you ready for the World Baseball Classic
The Red Sox shook up the roster a bit on Tuesday, maneuvering some of their 40-man roster.
The team announced that it had traded for infielder Tristan Gray from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for pitcher Luis Guerrero, who was just recently designated for assignment. Helping make room for Gray, the Red Sox DFA'd first baseman Nathaniel Lowe.
Also, as was first reported by Channel 7's Ari Alexander, the Sox are designating pitcher Josh Winckowski for assignment.
The 29-year-old Gray played in 30 games for the Rays during 2025, batting .231 (18-for-78) with five doubles, three home runs, and nine RBI while making nine starts at second base, seven at shortstop, three at third base, and one at first base.
A left-handed hitter, he also played in 72 games for Triple-A Charlotte, hitting .270 (67-for-248) with an .805 OPS.
Initially selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 13th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft, the Texas native has played in 47 career Major League games with the Rays (2023, 2025), Miami Marlins (2024), and Athletics (2024).
Lowe totaled a .790 OPS in 34 games with the Red Sox, making 26 starts while emerging as the club's primary first baseman. He would have been arbitration-eligible after making $10.3 million last season.
Winckowski has been with the Red Sox since being dealt to the team as part of the Andrew Benintendi trade following the 2020 season. His best season came in 2023 when he finished with a 2.28 ERA in 60 appearances. The righty pitched in just six games last season.
