Happy Valentine’s Day! Netflix decided to jump on board and treat us with a little early Valentine’s Day gift last week by adding it’s newest rom-com to the lineup of movie possibilities for your date night. “Your Place or Mine” is led by big time stars Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher and while these two are no strangers to romantic comedies, it felt like they were! People are all over social media complaining about their lack of chemistry and after watching the movie, I can honestly say that I get it!

“Your Place or Mine” is about two long distance best friends Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) and Peter (Ashton Kutcher). She lives in LA and he lives in NYC. Debbie comes to New York City to stay at Peter’s house while she finishes some classes to finally earn her degree and Peter heads to LA to stay at her house with her teenage son.

"Your Place or Mine" official movie trailer

It’s the classic house swap story line with the usual addition of fun side characters…what I was not expecting was the addition of Jesse Williams (you know from Grey’s Anatomy fame) as a potential love interest for Debbie. I purposely didn’t watch the trailer for the movie before I watched the movie so that I could be surprised by little things like this and I’m glad that I did because not much else about the movie surprised me. The storyline was very very predictable! I also thought the movie was extremely slow building…Reese and Ashton only really had a handful of scenes together that weren’t on a split screen due to them being in two different cities. I wish there had been more interaction between the two of them. The potential for a great romantic comedy was there but this movie just fell short in so many ways.

If you are planning to order in and then sit down for the perfect romantic Valentine’s Day movie, you might want to save this one for a different night. My husband and I watched it together and he fell asleep. There were several funny moments in the movie but not enough of an actual storyline to keep our attention. I saw it through until the end in hopes that something would happen that would make me love it but it just didn’t. Overall, the movie is fine but not great like I hoped it would be. The addition of the quirky side characters of Debbie’s son Jack and Peter’s ex Minka honestly made the movie for me. I expected more from Reese and Ashton after their previous rom-com experience. “Your Place or Mine” is a good watch when you just want something to watch but not really a great Valentine’s Day pick…stick with one of the classics and save this one for another day!
