Now that the time has changed and your sleep schedule is completely messed up, let's see how much your truly know about Daylight Saving Time. 

 

1. The first Monday after we spring forward meaning today, is associated with a 24% spike in heart attacks.

FACT-  According to Business Insider, it's because you're more likely to have a heart attack if you're underslept.  Think it's a coincidence? Nope, because the exact opposite happens when we Fall back, there's a 21% drop in heart attacks.

 

2.  We use 17% less electricity because of Daylight Saving Time.

FICTION-  The idea that it saves a ton of energy is a myth.  Sure, we save a little by not using lights as much.  But lightbulbs are super-efficient now and we end up using our air conditioners more when the sun sets later.  So, according to Live Science, it really doesn't help much, if at all.

 

3.  Research shows there will be about 3% fewer assaults today than next Monday.

FACT-  A study looked at over 10 years of crime stats from America's biggest cities and there's a 3% drop in assaults when we Spring forward, according to Live Science.  Then there's a spike in assaults when we Fall back, but they're not sure why.

 

5.  Less than half the countries in the world use Daylight Saving Time.

FACT-  According to TimeAndDate.com, less than 40% of the world's countries observe it.
