#Juneteenth
Today commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S.
It’s celebrated to commemorate the Union army general Gordon Granger’s reading of federal orders in Galveston, Texas proclaiming that the Civil War had ended and all slaves in Texas were free.
Newly freed slaves celebrated emancipation with “prayer, feasting, song, and dance” and the following year, the first official Juneteenth celebration was born.
The day gets its name from combining June and 19.
#FathersDay
Sunday is the day to celebrate dad and if you’re still trying to figure out what to get him, a new survey reveals what they DON’T want.
The top “unwanted” gift is clothing with 32.6% of dads reporting they don’t want them, which is too bad for the 46% of people who are planning to buy them.
Dads are also not excited to unwrap books and CDs (30% don’t want them) and almost that many (28.6%) are also not into getting personal care items.
As for what they do want? 56% say they just want to stay home to avoid the coronavirus, 20% would like to have a backyard BBQ and a third of dads would like gifts that create special memories.
