Be Safe, Drive Smart … or Get Big Fines!

National Work Zone Awareness Week
Austin Road work zone

It's National Work Zone Awareness Week. TxDOT is getting the word out with the 'Be Safe, Drive Smart' campaign. Last year, there were more than 22,000 traffic accidents in work zones in Texas with 186 people killed, which included 4 road workers. This was during COVID-19 quarantine with way less traffic and less road work. With more people driving and more active work zones, this can lead to more accidents and deaths.

TxDot has 5 things to you should do when driving through work zones. Great things to do when driving in general.

Don't forget fines are doubled in work zones when workers are present and can cost up to $2,000! You can also be fined $2K if you don't Move Over / Slow Down (20 mph) when approaching a TxDOT vehicle, emergency vehicle, law enforcement, tow truck or utility vehicle stopped with flashing lights activated on the roadside.

With the addition to the NB I-35 to NB 183 flyover work zone in action until September (at least), mind your safe driving to help save lives. Summer cruising could get really expensive!
