The “Boyfriend” singer shared, “first of all…other people’s music is one of my quickest shortcuts to figuring out how I feel. It’s always a barometer to check in with my nervous system, how are things sonically sitting with me. I use music almost like a prescription.”

Different kinds of music often allow Cameron to enter moments of clarity and give her space to understand what she needs to process.

On the other side of the coin, as someone who makes her own music, the Descendants star told us, “I really use songwriting…and musical production expression as…almost like therapy for myself.”

The singer revealed that she has had “a lot of trauma” in her life and that she actively participates in therapy for the trauma she has dealt with. “I work a lot with my body and music helps me get into my body.” She continued, “I would say the sort of freewriting that happens when I’m writing a song is always a very intuitive process that really lets me know where I’m at and what I need to be paying attention to.”

While on the road, the artist shared some of the mental health practices she “leans on the most.” Using bodywork as a tool to feel physically and mentally sound, Cameron explained, “my mental health, just like everybody else is not one size fits all. What I need is not what anybody else needs.” “I’ve very much ascertained if I’m not doing bodywork I’m living in my head, I’m not checking in with how my trauma is physicalizing, I end up being in a lot of physical pain…”

Dove concluded, “music is actually the most positive and informative tool in my life for my mental health.”
