According to Bloomberg, the streaming giant is planning their own movie about Britney Spears. Set to be directed by Erin Lee Carr, who specializes in true crime documentaries, the film has not been completed yet nor has a release date been scheduled. Bloomberg reports Netflix was working on the film prior to the debut of Framing Britney Spears.
Framing Britney Spears is the sixth episode of The New York Times Presents, a series of standalone documentaries from the acclaimed newspaper.
“Her rise was a global phenomenon. Her downfall was a cruel national sport,” a description on the trailer reads. “People close to Britney Spears and lawyers tied to her conservatorship now reassess her career as she battles her father in court over who should control her life.”
The documentary reveals eye-opening details regarding Spears’ conservatorship. Since 2008, Britney has been under conservatorship from her father, Jamie Spears. The film explores the #FreeBritney movement that fans have led in person and online attempting to aid the pop star in her efforts to remove her father as her conservator.
The documentary has received so much attention that it prompted an apology from Spears’ ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake. A key portion of the documentary focuses on the couple’s breakup when rumors ran rampant that she had cheated on Timberlake,
Rather than defending Britney and trying to shut down the rumors, Timberlake allegedly used them to leverage the popularity of his single “Cry Me a River” off his debut solo album.
“I’ve seen the messages, tags, comments, and concerns and I want to respond,” he said in a statement. Timberlake also issued an apology to Janet Jackson, the first time he’s publicly done so following her Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show.
“I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually, because I care for and respect these women and I know I failed,” he wrote in his statement.
The next hearing regarding Britney Spears’ conservatorship is scheduled to take place next month in Los Angeles.
