We’ve been having a “Sweet Dream” about Alessia Cara’s new album In the Meantime ever since it was released in late September. And now, we’ve had the opportunity to chat with the songstress about the new record and more.

During her conversation with Audacy's Rosa, Alessia revealed how she was able to become so vulnerable when releasing her new project. "I was just insecure about saying that stuff that I...said on this album. It's scary stuff to be like totally honest," explained the singer.

She added, "There was a lot shame that came with being sad for me because my life is so great...but there's a lot of shame that still comes with saying, 'but I'm actually still super depressed.' It was hard for me to admit that for myself and to other people."

“Sweet Dream” marked the first single Cara shared from the record, a song that focuses on her struggles with insomnia. Cara previously told Audacy she felt like  “the only person on this Earth that is awake like it feels like everyone else knows how to do life except for me.”

While the song wasn’t meant to be a solution for her struggles, she wanted to use it as a way to connect with others who may be going through something similar.

Cara has long been a mental health advocate and makes it a focal point of her lyrics.

She explained, “I think people should be candid about it in music, but in conversation, and every day. I feel like it’s one of those things where… we feel like our mental health is not as important or tangible as physical health… When it comes to something that’s more invisible, like our minds or our emotional health… it’s taboo almost.”
