During the conversation, Mickey recalled a time, early in her career she tried to “hide her blackness,” before getting a wake-up call from her husband that would change the direction of her career forever.
“It was naive of me to think it was going to be an easy thing to do,” she shared of breaking into the industry “I lost myself. It was a very, very dark time for me.”
She continued, “My husband called my ass out! I remember I was sitting with him one night and I said, ‘Why do you think Country music isn’t working for me?’ And he [said]… ‘Because you're running away from everything that makes you different. You’re running away from your blackness...’ It just shot me to the core.”
While it wasn’t the first time she heard those words from her husband, it was the first time they struck her so hard and from that moment on, Mickey realized she had completely lost herself while trying to fit in.
“I was trying to be as white as I possibly could to fit in this [industry],” she said. “It was a huge awakening… I needed that awakening. I needed that calling out.”
