While Sheryl Crow has been a big name in music since she first gained a following in the early ‘90s, she says she’s shaped into a new, improved version of herself following a breast cancer diagnosis in 2006. While Crow’s cancer was caught in the very early stages, greatly increasing her chances of survival, she shared the diagnosis still uprooted the way she lived and greatly impacted her outlook on life.
“There was a moment there, where you hear the word, ‘cancer,’ and you think, ‘Am I going to think about this every morning — about whether it going to come back,” Crow told Long, reflecting on the moment she was diagnosed. “I always tell people, ‘There’s a lesson in every challenge.’ [But] I would never wish for nay body to have a diagnosis that can be life-threatening.”
Crow went on to detail that her diagnosis specifically exposed how much she lacked taking care of herself physically and mentally, a problem she believes many women struggle with as natural-born caretakers.
“I had to look at my life and go ‘OK. How am I going to redefine and refine? I just started manifesting other things,” she shared. “When I think about my old life, I feel removed from it. But when I was living it - that’s the only life you know. It didn’t seem unusual.”
