Why actress Lashana Lynch, first Black female 007, deleted social media

Lashana Lynch will make history in the latest installment of the James Bond film series, but her upcoming role is also the reason why she had to temporarily delete her social media accounts.

Lynch, who will play the first Black female 007 agent in “No Time to Die,” faced harsh backlash online after her role in the movie was leaked last year, to the point that she deleted all of her social media apps and saw nobody but family for a week.

The British actress opened up about the backlash in a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar, saying that she tried not to take racially-charged negative comments personally.

“I am one Black woman — if it were another Black woman cast in the role, it would have been the same conversation, she would have got the same attacks, the same abuse," said Lynch. "I just have to remind myself that the conversation is happening and that I'm a part of something that will be very, very revolutionary.”

Lynch will play Nomi, a spy who takes over James Bond’s 007 code name after he goes into exile following the events of the previous Bond film, “Spectre,” in the movie slated to hit theaters in April.

The movie was co-written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag,” “Killing Eve”), who Lynch worked with closely to ensure that her character was bringing a “fresh female perspective” to the franchise.

Lynch also made it a point to speak to Black audiences with her role. “I didn't want to waste an opportunity when it came to what Nomi might represent. I searched for at least one moment in the script where Black audience members would nod their heads, tutting at the reality but glad to see their real life represented,” she shared.

Audiences may recognize Lynch from her 2019 role as Maria Rambeau, a pilot and single mother who plays a pivotal role in the story arc of “Captain Marvel.”

“No Time to Die” is set to be released in theaters on April 2, 2021.
