A fox that bit numerous people, including a congressman, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. was euthanized Wednesday, just one day after it was captured.
D.C. Health told ABC 10 the female fox was “humanely euthanized” and had tested positive for rabies.
Capitol police said prior to the fox’s capture, it received “several reports of aggressive fox encounters.”
On Tuesday, Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-Calif.) confirmed he was bitten by a fox.
“What does the fox say? Last night, I found out…,” He wrote. “Joking aside, animal bites are extremely serious. In the case of an encounter, please speak with a physician immediately… Happy to report that I am healthy and back at work serving the people of #CA07.”
NBC Washington reports that three fox kits that were found near Capitol Hill were also euthanized. "Since the mother tested positive for the rabies virus and the kits could have been exposed during grooming or other means, they were no longer able to be safely rehabilitated and were humanely euthanized," DC Health said in a statement.
