Powhatan County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - One week after it was postponed due to a large turnout, the Powhatan School Board met Monday, March 18 in the auditorium at Powhatan High following alleged racial incidents within the system.
The emotional meeting lasted a total of three hours and over 50 people signed up to speak, some calling for more action and some saying the current policy is sufficient.
“I’ve been called the N word, monkey, slave,” said a Powhatan County 7th grader during the rescheduled meeting on Monday. “I’ve reported this every day and nothing’s changed.”
The Powhatan School Board said they’re going to work to make changes. However, no immediate steps were taken.
In February, a photo which allegedly shows a Powhatan High School student with a racial slur written on her arm circulated online. The students involved in the photo were reportedly disciplined, but it is still unclear exactly what the punishment was or what the school district’s policy is for handling racist incidents.
