Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Former House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn (D-Fairfax) will not be running for re-election. The Democrat did not provide a reason in her statement, but it is likely tied to the fact she was placed in a district with Delegate Kathy Tran (D-Fairfax) during redistricting.

In her statement, Filler-Corn says, “I am proud of the transformative actions we took during my tenure. We invested in public education and transportation, made our communities safer from gun violence, supported working families, expanded reproductive freedom, rooted out discrimination, secured voting rights, protected our environment, and kept Virginia the top state for business in the nation. In just two years, we brought historic change to the Commonwealth that followed the will of the people and remains popular today. More importantly, we did this by including diverse voices from across Virginia."

Filler-Corn was Virginia's first woman and first Jewish speaker. She was Speaker from 2019, when Democrats regained control of the House of Delegates, until 2021, when Republicans regained control. Shortly after losing the Speakership, Filler-Corn was then forced out as Minority Leader.
