(Richmond, VA) - A new monument was unveiled Wednesday morning on Brown's Island called the Emancipation and Freedom Monument. The monument is two 12-foot bronze statues representing a man and a woman with an infant child that were newly freed from slavery.

The monument is located at the Fifth Street pedestrian bridge. On the pedestal of the monument, there are the names, images and stories of 10 people who represent the struggle for freedom.

Richmond mayor Levar Stoney say that the monument, along with the Maggie Walker statue and the Rumors of War statues that have gone up in recent years, signify a new Richmond and a new Virginia that represents a more equitable future and a sign that the city and state are moving forward.
