Richmond, Va. (NewsradioWRVA.com) - Richmond Police are still in the early stages of the investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Monday morning.

Richmond Police chief Gerald Smith says around 3:30 Monday morning, Richmond Police officers noticed a vehicle driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed on Interstate 95. Officers followed the vehicle off 95 at the Maury Street exit and then eventually to the Manchester area. The vehicle crashed at the corner of Commerce and Stockton off Hull Street.

The suspect, identified as 20 year old Dakari Reinhardt, got out of the car and ran to a nearby apartment complex where a shootout occurred between Reinhardt and the officer in the apartment complex's breezeway. Both were injured.

Smith says that Reinhardt is currently in the ICU while the officer, who has not been identified, is expected to recover, though Chief Smith says that it will be a long road to recovery. He has an injury to his hip.

Smith says that he has not been able to speak to the injured officer, nor the suspect. It's not clear at this point who fired first.
