Richmond, Va. (NewsradioWRVA.com) - Richmond International Airport is getting $665,000 under the Federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and, according to spokesman Troy Bell, that money is going to be used to renovate the Customs facility at the airport in order to meet U.S. Customs and Border Protection standards.
Bell says that will, once again, allow for international destinations to arrive at the airport and will allow more of those flights leaving the airport. These funds awarded to the airport come in addition to almost 4 million dollars that had been secured by Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine in the 2022 government spending bill for the project. Bell says Congressman Donald McEachin was also instrumental in securing the funding.
Bell says the renovations will be completed by mid 2023. International flights have not been allowed to fly to or from the airport because the inspection facility is too out of date. Bell says this change will mean that Richmond International Airport is "back in the game".
