Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Central Virginia health districts have issued what is known as a "spike alert," meaning there has been a noticeable increase in opioid overdoses. The Richmond-Henrico Health District's Beth Powell could not say which locality was seeing the increase, but the alert provides a warning that something may be up.

Powell says the warning lets people be aware that there has been an increase, and that some people may be more vulnerable to potential overdoses. Those people include people who use opioids alone, and people who used to use and haven't for some time, which lowers their tolerances.

Not all opioid use is illegal. Opioids can be highly addictive.
