Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The same week the Northam Administration asked the City of Richmond to slow its process of removing the pedestals of its Confederate monuments, the Southern Poverty Law Center requested the pedestals go. The Northam Administration wants more public imput, while the SPLC says they serve as symbols of "unfinished business."
SPLC Fellow Kimberly Probolus says in many case, Confederate imagery remains on the pedestals, and that progress cannot truly start until the images are gone. She admits removing everything will not solve racism, but says keeping them up prevents progress. Probolus also says she is understanding that these are large objects that are not easily moved.
Northam also this week announced he wanted to replace the time capulse within the Lee Monument with a time capsule that more accurately shows what Virginia is now. The time capsule is believed to be in the Lee Pedestal.
