Dear Matt,
I’ll be blunt. My apartment complex neighbor has very loud…well, ‘doing its noises. It’s all the time, and the apartment walls are so thin it’s very evident what is happening…to the very last detail.
Thankfully I don’t have young children or live with my parents (awkward idea right). However, I really want to do something? This just feels…unacceptable, right?
-Neighbor Andrea
Dear Neighbor Andrea,
Yeah, this is awkward. It sucks when people build shared living spaces without taking into account sound. I’d maybe drop an anonymous letter to the neighbor? It could be that they have no clue — and they might be mortified that they’re practically making audio porn. Maybe even recommend soundproofing? A little cheap soundproofing will go a long way.
If that doesn’t work, another similar tactic is asking other neighbors who agree and can hear the sound to send their own letters. A barrage of letters might be enough to publicly shame the loud noise.
However, if that doesn’t work, I would contact the landlord. Hopefully, the landlord will say something that will make the situation intervene.
If none of that works, investigate disturbance noise codes. I HATE the idea of involving police in the situation, but it really would be rude of your neighbor to continue…philandering loudly to the annoyance and problems of the neighbors.
