Astros waste another quality Justin Verlander start, lose third straight to Mariners

The Houston Astros are losers of three in a row to the AL West leading Seattle Mariners after failing to take advantage of another quality start from their pitching staff.

Justin Verlander gave up one measly home run, his only earned run surrendered in seven innings of three-hit baseball. It should have been enough to give the Astros a chance, but not with this anemic offense and spotty bullpen.

The Mariners took Wednesday night's game 2-1 on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by J.P. Crawford to end the game in the 10th inning.

It was the third straight night an Astros starting pitcher delivered a quality start in which the team could not cash in. Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown in the nights before Verlander also gave Houston quality, but still came up short. The three starters in this series have combined for 13 hits allowed and 22 strikeouts in 19 total innings pitched.

The Astros will try to avoid a series sweep Thursday afternoon with rookie Spencer Arrighetti on the mound.
