Georgia saw mixed updates on education, traffic safety, and sports Monday as state and local developments shaped the day’s “3 Things You Need to Know.”
A new Kids Count report examining child well-being across Georgia showed continued progress in reducing the number of children living in poverty. The report also highlighted ongoing challenges in education. It found that many young children are not enrolled in school, while a significant number of fourth graders are not proficient in reading and eighth graders are not proficient in math. The findings point to steady improvement in some family economic measures, but continued academic gaps that remain a concern for educators and policymakers.
In metro Atlanta, new traffic safety measures are being introduced in high-foot-traffic areas of Midtown and Downtown. The city is installing additional “No Turn on Red” signs at intersections where pedestrians, cyclists, and scooter riders are especially present. Officials say the changes are intended to improve safety in busy corridors where vehicle and pedestrian activity frequently overlap. The updated signage is part of broader efforts to reduce collisions and improve walkability in some of Atlanta’s most heavily traveled urban districts.
Meanwhile, in sports, the University of Georgia baseball team is headed to the College World Series after a narrow 11–9 extra-inning victory over Mississippi State. The win secures the Bulldogs a spot in Omaha, where they will face the Texas Longhorns in their first game of the tournament. The team’s advancement adds to a strong season and brings increased attention to Georgia’s postseason run as they prepare for national competition.
