Metro Atlanta is seeing a mix of academic achievement, international soccer buzz, and a packed slate of free community events as residents head into the weekend.

A Stockbridge graduate is drawing national attention after an impressive college admissions and scholarship haul. Patrick Pruitt, a graduate of Woodland High School, reportedly applied to 270 colleges, was accepted to all but six, and received approximately $17 million in scholarship offers. Pruitt earned the results with a 3.8 GPA, weighted to a 4.2 due to advanced coursework—placing him in the top 10% of the Class of 2026. He also scored a 1200 on the SAT, participated in varsity cross country and track, and completed an internship with the Henry County Water Authority. Educators say his achievement highlights the impact of combining academics with extracurricular involvement and real-world experience.

In sports and pop culture crossover news, excitement is building around the upcoming World Cup, and even major brands are joining in. Starbucks has released free World Cup-themed drink sleeves as part of its promotional efforts tied to the global tournament. Meanwhile, Spanish soccer sensation Lamine Yamal—one of the most highly anticipated young players in the competition—was spotted shopping at a North Georgia Walmart near the Chattanooga area. The sighting quickly sparked social media curiosity, with fans speculating about what the rising star was buying ahead of the international event.

Across the metro area, residents will also find a wide variety of free events and entertainment options this weekend. In Suwanee, the Summer Porch Jam is scheduled for Friday night, offering live music and community gathering opportunities. LaGrange is hosting a Summer Street Party, while Acworth will feature the Threads of Freedom Parade. In addition, Futbol Fest at Colony Square will bring soccer-themed festivities to Midtown Atlanta, and the Farmer’s Market at The Battery continues its seasonal offerings. Visitors can also explore “Georgia the Whole Day Through,” a free immersive experience running through the 15th at the Georgia World Congress Center, highlighting the state’s culture, history, and attractions.
