Metro Atlanta’s population growth is slowing after decades of rapid expansion, while another major weekend closure on Interstate 285 is expected to create traffic headaches for drivers.
A new report shows the pace of growth across Metro Atlanta has slowed, with the changing housing market playing a major role. Lower birth rates and reduced migration are also contributing to the slowdown.
The city of Atlanta recorded the largest population increase in the region, followed by Forsyth and Henry counties. While the region continues to grow, the slower pace marks a change from the rapid population increases Metro Atlanta has experienced for decades.
Drivers will also need to plan ahead this weekend as the Georgia Department of Transportation continues work on the I-285 project.
Both northbound and southbound lanes will close between Exit 9 at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Exit 7 at Cascade Road. The closure is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Friday and continue until 5 a.m. Monday.
Drivers traveling through the area should expect delays and consider alternate routes or allow additional time.
