It wasn’t the start the San Francisco Giants envisioned.
After being shut out for the first 20 innings of the season, the Giants arrive in San Diego looking to reset as they open a series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.
Giants broadcaster Dave Fleming isn’t hitting the panic button just yet, pointing instead to a “fragmented” start to the season—between unusual scheduling and disrupted rhythm—as a key factor in the slow offensive start.
There’s also added attention on new manager Tony Vitello, but early impressions remain positive. According to Fleming, the former college coach has brought a steady, knowledgeable presence that players have already bought into.
On the mound, the Giants will lean heavily on their core rotation, including Logan Webb, as they look to stabilize against a Padres lineup built on contact.
One early-season wrinkle to watch: MLB’s new automated ball-strike challenge system, which has already added drama—and fan excitement—throughout opening weekend.
For San Francisco, though, the formula is simple: find some offensive rhythm and quiet the early-season noise.
