The Padres held the Cubs to just one run in their two Wild Card games, and advanced to the NLDS thanks to Wednesday's 4-1 win. The Padres jumped out to an early lead thanks to an RBI-single from Xander Bogaerts in the 2nd inning. Ethan Salas tacked on another run with a sac-fly to center field. Nick Pivetta ran into trouble in the 4th inning, and yielded a run before Craig Stammen used a quick hook to bring in Bradgley Rodriguez, who left recorded the final two outs of the inning to escape the jam. With the Padres clinging to a 2-1 lead in the 4th inning and having already dipped into their bullpen, Stammen used Gavin Sheets as a pinch hitter with two outs and a man on second base against righty Daniel Palencia. Sheets delivered in a big way, blasting a 2-run homer that gave the Padres a 3-run cushion that they would never relinquish. Rodriguez, Jason Adam, Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller combined to hurl 5.2 scoreless innings and propel the Padres to the NLDS, where they'll face the Brewers in Milwaukee beginning on Saturday.
