The Dallas man arrested for human smuggling in San Antonio remains in federal custody after making a court appearance Friday.
On Thursday night, police handcuffed Aron Bernard Griffin just moments after he opened the back of his big rig in a San Antonio truck stop and allowing dozens of undocumented migrants to stream out of the trailer and make a break for it.
Many of them got away but others were too exhausted by traveling more than 150 miles in that stifling trailer, and simply collapsed on the hot asphalt in the parking lot.
Griffin was taken into federal custody and appeared before a magistrate Friday and he's now charged with one count of smuggling un-documented non-citizens.
He tells federal agents he picked up a trailer load of men in Laredo, men from Mexico, Honduras and other Central American nations, expecting to get paid when they arrived in San Antonio.
