After another blistering weekend, more than a dozen wildfires are burning in Texas today, all of them in the eastern two-thirds of the state.

The biggest one, now burning for two weeks, is the Somervell County Chalk Mountain Fire. It's burned 6,700 acres but is now nearly 90% contained.

With August just beginning, the Texas A&M Forest Service says persistent temperatures above 100 degrees will continue to draw moisture from live vegetation.

Live fuel samples in the Cross Timbers, Rolling Plains and Hill Country are at critical levels, making tree torching, or the transition of fire from the ground to the canopy of trees, likely with elevated fire weather conditions until we get some rain.
