A group of Texas House Republicans is calling for the State Fair of Texas to reverse its recent decision to ban firearms on the fair grounds. The lawmakers argue that the policy prohibits law-abiding citizens from carrying guns and undermines the fair’s claim to celebrate Texas values.

Last year, a gunman injured three people in a shooting at the fair.

In a letter addressed to the fair's board, the legislators contend that the new policy could make attendees feel less safe. They cited data from CrimeResearch.org that indicated 82% of mass shootings occur in gun-free zones. The letter also noted that armed civilians have successfully intervened in 35% of mass shootings in such areas.

The lawmakers argued that the State Fair of Texas, which has historically aligned with the state's support for Second Amendment rights, should reconsider its stance. They suggested that if the policy remains in place, it might prompt the Texas Legislature to introduce new legislation in the 2025 session to safeguard gun rights on publicly managed properties.

Karissa Condoianis, Senior Vice President of Public Relations for the State Fair of Texas, has made the following statement regarding the situation.

"We are aware that the Texas Attorney General’s Office sent a letter to the City of Dallas about the recent announcement concerning firearms at the annual State Fair. It appears from the letter that the Attorney General’s Office is seeking clarification regarding the City’s relationship with the State Fair of Texas – a private, not-for-profit organization – and the State Fair’s use of Fair Park under a long-term lease agreement between the two parties. We have not spoken with the City yet but stand ready to cooperate with them, as needed."
