The Texas Legislature's latest Special Session gavels in this afternoon.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has called lawmakers back to Austin to try again to pass legislation to create an education savings account that would let families be reimbursed a part of their taxes to pay for their children's private schools when parents believe their local public schools are inadequate.

In a statement, Governor Abbott said the move will "chart a brighter future for all Texas children by empowering parents to choose the best education option for their children."

Opponents argue that redirecting taxpayer money to these education accounts will deprive public schools of funding.

Today's opening session is at 1 p.m. today.

Other permissible topics for the legislature to act on during this Special Session include prohibiting COVID-19 vaccine mandates by private employers and doing more to reduce illegal immigration by creating a criminal offense for illegal entry into the state from a foreign nation, and authorizing all licensed peace officers to remove illegal immigrants from Texas.
