I'm not sure how you spent your holiday break but I spent quite a bit of time in front of the screen bouncing from show to show in my spare time! At times, I think I'm eclectic in my tastes and then other times I am very predictable.
We can relate if you're the type who will put on an older movie that you've seen a hundred times so you can loosely pay attention. There's just something about the comfort of a favorite movie but also the thrill of a new flick is always nice! Here are 5 of my picks worthy of time:
1) The Unforgiveable featuring Sandra Bullock. First, get the Kleenex ready because the tears will flow if you have a heart. Essentially, Bullock's character is released from prison on good behavior after she was sentenced in the shooting death of a police officer. The film follows her through the struggle of acclimating to society after prison time while trying to reconnect with her family. It's a movie, not a series, so it's a one sitting watch and it's intense from start to finish!
2) Don't Look Up featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill & more star in this satirical end of the world movie. If you've seen Day After Tomorrow, 2012, Armageddon or any of the other end of the world movies then you can easily grasp the concept of the movie but the cringeworthy interactions never stop. It seems like every second that passes makes this movie harder and harder to take serious but that was their point. They poke fun at our society's inability to take serious things serious. If you make it to the credits there is added comedy throughout.
3) Money Heist - This movie was filmed in Spanish so you will either need to speak the language or be okay with subtitles and/or voice overs. I'm not a big fan of voice overs so I watched it with sub-titles. This has a lot of episodes over several seasons so you'll need to set time aside to watch or binge. "El Professor" has come up with the perfect strategy to rob the biggest banks in Europe and leads his team of mercenaries into the fray to outsmart the local military and police. It's intense, it's heavy and it's amazing! This series has some of the best character development I've seen since Breaking Bad. A must watch!
4) Tremors - Look, I know this movie is old but it never gets old if you love Reba McEntire & Kevin Bacon. This movie is about a small town in the middle of nowhere that comes under attack by underground monsters that defy science and history. They are deadly and have trapped all 7 of the citizens of Perfection, Nevada until they figure out a way to fight back!
5) The Social Dilemma - This movie made huge waves last year when it was released because of it's explanation of social media's ability to capture, keep and profit off of our attention. It's filmed and directed by some of the early architects of Google, Facebook and other popular sites. It dives into the addiction created by social media, email and technology and how it controls our thoughts and ideas. It's eye-opening, scary but a must watch for anyone with children on social media or anyone who uses social media regularly.
