Must See: George Strait in Rarely Seen Interview from 1980's in Victoria, Texas

"George Strait can make a cowgirl's jeans twitch from 100 yards. Whatever that means."

I grew up in Goliad, Texas about 20 minutes West of Victoria, Texas where this video was shot so you can imagine the nostalgia I felt when I saw the concert was at Sun Valley Ranch. In the 90's I cut my teeth on their dance floor two steppin' and polka dancing to cover bands so this one really hits home.

George Strait was fresh off of 5 number one singles and had groves of women waiting in the wings at every one of his shows. You can see the sheer surprise in the faces of the reporters and hear the adulation in their voice about not realizing how popular the King really had been.

This video and this crowd really made me think about Parker McCollum shows and the way his fans talk about his music and his persona. Another striking piece to me was the interview with the woman who talked about how all the women had brought roses for him from the front row and how they wanted an autograph or even a look.

A couple of other pieces that caught my eye was the trademark George Strait Strut to the stage and how soft spoke and humble he came across in his time on camera during the interview.

No cellphones, no camera phones, no cameras at all, really. What a time to be alive and how starkly different things look but also how eerily similar they also tend to be. There's no doubt that George Strait's voice, personality and music took the world by storm in the 80's and still lives on as folks clamor to see him any chance they get. Long live King George Strait and long live country music in Texas.
