Crowd at Game 5 chants for T.J. Oshie.
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

In Game 1 on Thursday night the Capitals needed a few minutes to get going. They didn't get their first shot on net for nearly 10 minutes.

That was not the case Saturday.

The defending Stanley Cup champions got after it from the opening faceoff and immediately had Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Petr Mrazek under pressure.

The breakthrough goal came under four minutes into the game with some nifty stick handling by Alex Ovechkin to feed Nicklas Backstrom.

Backstrom's first period goal gave him three on the series and the Capitals looked prime for more.

"Right now, Backy is a scoring machine," Ovechkin said postgame.

“These are the two best back-to-back playoff games that (Backstrom) has played in the five years that I’ve been here," head coach Todd Reirden said.

The physical play and speed was noticeably different in Game 2 with Ovechkin delivering his fair share of licks.

The Capitals added to their lead with a great individual play from T.J. Oshie.

Despite killing a pair of penalties, the Caps couldn't keep the Canes off the board as the visitors were able to claw back to 2-1 on a goal from Lucas Wallmark, which stood after the Caps challenge for goaltender interference was dismissed.

Once again the Hurricanes didn't dissipate gently into that good night, but the Caps grabbed a 2-1 first period lead and ended the night with a 2-0 series edge. And that's reason enough for celebration.
