BMitch: Commanders right to hold pre-draft visit for Hendon Hooker

The Commanders will reportedly host Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker for a pre-draft visit, casting at least some doubt over the franchise’s commitment to Sam Howell as their quarterback of the future.

“This is not a third day, fifth or sixth round pick,” JP Finlay said. “This is a big name. odds are he’s not playing for you this season…but what does this say about the current quarterback room?”

BMitch doesn’t think it says anything at all, and shouldn’t be something that anyone has an issue with.

“I don’t think this says anything,” BMitch said. “They have to do their due diligence. You know there’s a possibility you need to add a quarterback. What if this guy starts slipping in the draft, and you know how good he could be.

“I think right now, they’re comfortable with Sam…but you don’t stop building.”

Hooker tore his ACL in November and likely won’t be a factor in his rookie year, so Howell would likely be the starter regardless in the short term. Still, even if the franchise has faith in Howell, BMitch doesn’t want to hear any criticisms about the team leaving no stone unturned when it comes to evaluating a critical position like quarterback.

“As fans, we think when we hear, ‘This guy is our quarterback,’ it means stop looking,” BMitch said. “What quarterback do we have that we shouldn’t be looking for quarterbacks? You have to always look.”
