Very relevant NFL news for the Commanders from out west on Monday: Kyler Murray is definitely not starting in Week 1 for the Cardinals…but neither is Colt McCoy, as the Cardinals cut him ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.
The Colt McCoy return to FedEx saga is now off the table…but who the hell will be under center for Arizona on Sept. 10?
“They’re either going to play rookie fifth-round pick Clayton Tune, who has had some moments that were pretty good in the preseason but looked more last than last year’s Easter egg this weekend,” Grant said, “or, probably, they just traded for Joshua Dobbs from the Browns.”
Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon, in a press briefing after the McCoy cut, said of his two QBs that “I think we have a plan in place, but I want to see them both play football still. This week we've got some work and then the following week we got some work, but I feel good with where we're at."
Makes sense in that the Cardinals know what a veteran like McCoy is, so without Murray, why not take a look at either a potential younger capable backup or their fifth-round pick – but Blough (seven) has more career starts than Dobbs, who has six seasons in the league but didn’t start until Week 17 last year for Tennessee.
But, to Grant, at least, it renders a preseason where McCoy played sparingly (as the presumed veteran starter) and their best QB was actually David Blough look…well, useless.
“This makes all of the offseason and preseason and camp look not that important,” Grant said, “but this guy is a NASA-level rocket scientist genius, legit brilliant. He was brought in by the Titans, and within a couple of days learned their playbook and came in over Malik Willis and played okay.”
But is he any different than McCoy would’ve been?
“Dobbs is not terrible, but he’s not good, either; he’s kind of like your Heinicke/Brissett bucket of ‘he’s not going to kill us’,” Grant said. “But, in the first game in an offense and his second week in a building, it probably won’t look that good, and I imagine the odd will go further in Washington’s favor.”
Indeed, the ‘Manders were seven-point favorites in what could be their only non-underdog role of the year (or at least for a while), and even Tune might change that…uh, tune…a little more towards the tank is obvious.
“I have never called a Week 1 game in the NFL a must-win game,” Grant replied, “but there is no way they can lose that game. They stink.”
“It’s Clayton Tune time? They are leaning in hard…the process has nothing on the Arizona Cardinals this year,” Danny said. “If (the Commanders) don’t win this one, there’s no point for the rest of them. If you tune in next Sunday and they come in second, it’s all on the table for me. Fire who you want to fire, and play who you want to play.”
