The Carson Wentz show will officially come to Washington when training camp opens, but until we see the former No. 2 overall pick in true game action, wonder will be there: did the Commanders trade for a guy who can rebound, or a guy beyond reclamation on his third team in three years?
JP Finlay has been watching Wentz from afar for all these years (DC ain’t far from Philly and we do play them twice a year), and so he has a synopsis on where the true talent lies.
“What we saw from Wentz in 2017 was Josh Allen before Josh Allen: big, strong, and athletic, with a rifle,” JP said on BMitch and Finlay Thursday, as Commanders minicamp ended. “I don’t think that’s coming back, but I don’t think 2020, which was god awful, is coming back either.”
JP’s suggestion? Hope the Wentz the Commanders get is the 2019 version that led Philadelphia to the playoffs with a cast of castoffs at wide receiver.
“He had 4,000 passing yards, 27 touchdowns to seven interceptions, and completed 64 percent of his passes,” JP said. “We know he’s not scared to go deep, and (offensive coordinator Norv) Turner will call those plays, and guys will get deep.”
JP will be there watching every snap as part of Commanders coverage on NBC Sports Washington, and he knows what he sees from the newcomer:
“A big opportunity for Carson Wentz this fall…and I can’t wait to watch it.”
