Washington fans want coach Ron Rivera replaced now. They want a new name tomorrow. They want a new stadium location soon.
Seems like winning is secondary to special interests with individual causes.
People, take a breath.
The toxic atmosphere of the Dan Snyder era will not fade quickly. It has left detractors unwilling to believe better times are not only coming, but here now. They need immediate proof or threaten to lose faith in new ownership before giving it a chance. Winning off the field won’t come so easily.
The simple fact is the name Commanders won’t be changed soon. New owners have far too many other immediate concerns. Maybe it can be reasonably discussed in 2024, but even then it would be at least another year away. The sad part is there’s no other winning name. Returning to Redskins or opting for Red Hogs, Red Wolves or something else means most fans will be unhappy, so better to soldier on with Commanders for now. Let the matter breathe for a little while.
The new stadium may come before the end of the decade, but not 2027. Negotiating with two states and the District is far different than, say, the Chicago Bears shopping around the suburbs but in the end still dealing with the state of Illinois. Josh Harris and partners are playing a bidding war that will take at least one year to complete, and then there’s starting a new stadium design from scratch. This needs to go through the process for a while.
Rivera’s fate won’t be decided until January. Replacing him during the season is a sure trip to 4-13 and that’s the last thing the new owners want. Better to endure to the end.
Thoughts of Eric Bieniemy replacing Rivera right away are foolish. Bieniemy needs to focus on the offense this season. Afterwards, we’ll see how it went. And, the new owners have the right to pick someone they like. It could be Bieniemy, it might be someone else.
These are big-ticket issues that can’t be resolved immediately. Doing so would lead to more chaos.
So, give this season a chance. After all, following sports is supposed to be fun, not a rallying cry for chaos. Fans are so used to the nonstop nonsense of the Snyder era that many just can’t relax and spend time watching Sam Howell’s development. No, they want Jacoby Brissett to play, and the brass to spend a first-rounder on a passer next year.
Frankly, this background noise is needless and exhausting. Winning would help defuse it, and the Commanders have a chance for a wild card if the offensive line holds. We’ll spend the next few months seeing if that happens.
“The two most powerful warriors are patience and time,” wrote Leo Tolstoy.
Unfortunately, too many fans are out of patience thanks to Snyder. But, either accept change takes time, or be aggravated constantly. Sadly, that’s no way to live life.
