What looked like a gruesome, perhaps career-altering injury Wednesday night may have been a best-case: Stone Garrett suffered a fractured fibula crashing into the wall at Yankee Stadium, and while he’ll have an MRI to determine if there is any more damage, it looks like Garrett is done for the year but should be good to go next spring.
A double downer on a night where MacKenzie Gore was rocked thanks to some shoddy defense by the surging Nats, a reminder they are still a young team learning – but a serious injury to a teammate is never easy.
“He was obviously in a tremendous amount of pain, and just a bad scene where they had to bring out the cart,” Cakes said. “His teammates were shaken up, and that’s just a brutal way to take a loss to the Yankees and see a teammate suffer a significant injury.”
Gore was particularly shaken up, and the Junks played the audio of his postgame media briefing.
“These guys are with each other every single day, and it sucks when something like that happens,” Cakes said, with Bish replying, “Yeah, and you don’t know exactly how it will affect the rest of his career depending on the extent of the injuries.”
Watching it again, the guys all agreed that it looked like an innocent enough play, but as we know, sometimes the worst injuries don’t look like it at the time.
“They can do a field diagnosis, but sometimes the leg is so stiff, it’s hard to tell,” EB said.
“You have to have the MRI, but when I tore my ACL playing basketball, I knew immediately, because I had some previous leg issues,” JP said.
Perhaps a major crisis averted, although best wishes to Garrett as he recovers and tries to return to the Nats in 2024!
“He was definitely one of the best stories for the Nats and baseball for sure,” producer Drab said. “He was doing real estate a couple years ago waiting for another chance, but grinded his way into being an everyday player this year.”
