Zach Ertz is headed back to the NFC East, but this team he's joining the Washington Commanders on a one-year deal worth up to $5 million.
Ertz is reunited with former Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who is now the new offensive coordinator for the Commanders under new head coach Dan Quinn and new owner Joshua Harris.
Ertz, 33, played his first eight seasons in Philadelphia, helping the team win the Super Bowl in 2018 before being dealt to Arizona in 2022. He had 27 catches in seven games last season for the Cardinals and was signed by the Detroit Lions for the NFC Championship game, but he did not play in the game.
In his retirement speech on Monday, Philadelphia Eagles legend Jason Kelce told a Zach Ertz story to illustrate how to respond to the Philadelphia fan base and play in "the most passionate sports town in America."
“Rightfully so the fans ripped him apart, crushing him for doing it,” Kelce said of Ertz avoiding a block against former Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict. “The next week, the first catch I saw Zach Ertz snag, he ran after the catch like I had never seen. It took three guys to bring him down and I heard the Linc erupt with cheers for his effort. Today, you won’t find a single Philadelphian with a bad thing to say about Zach Ertz and the legacy he left behind.”
