After a 20-13 loss to the Carolina Panthers, the Week 17 playoff math is simple for the Washington Football Team: Beat the Philadelphia Eagles and they win the NFC East.

And if they are going to win to make the playoffs for the first time since 2015, they will have to do it on primetime.

The NFL has flexed Washington’s game to Sunday Night Football, the marquee game on the league’s final day of the regular season. Washington will play in the 256th (and final) game of the 2020 season.

So with the season on the line, Washington will have to get a win in primetime. And for those who know their recent history, this is not good news for Ron Rivera’s squad.

This will be Washington’s first Sunday night game since 2017 and first primetime game of the 2020 season. (Washington’s win over the Pittsburgh Steelers was on a Monday, but with a 5 p.m. kickoff was not a primetime game.)

Since 2002, Washington has gone 16-36 in primetime games.

Washington has not won a primetime game since Week 12 of the 2017 season, a 20-10 Thursday night win over the New York Giants. Washington was 0-2 in primetime in 2019 and 0-2 in 2018.

Washington has won two in a row on Sunday Night Football: They beat the then Oakland Raiders in Week 3 of 2017 and defeated the Green Bay Packers in Week 11 of 2016.

But Washington has not won a primetime away game since a Saturday night Week 16 game in Philadelphia in 2015. They have lost their last six primetime away games.
