Carolina Panthers owner Dave Tepper has made the decision to fire Head Coach Matt Rhule. The decision came Monday after the Panthers 37-15 home loss to the 49ers on Sunday.
Rhule went 11-27 in less than 3 seasons at the helm in Carolina. All of those 27 losses came when the Panthers allowed 17 or more points. That to me speaks volumes about Carolina's offensive woes in his tenure. Every other NFL franchise had multiple wins during that span under that same statistical category.
Carolina started 1-4 under Rhule this season. His firing coming during the season, is something that doesn't happen at the NFL level that often. Generally, NFL coaches are fired on "Black Monday", the Monday after the regular season ends. Rhule was in years 3 of a seven year 62 million dollar deal, signed in 2020. He had over 40 million left on that deal.
Defensive Pass Game Coordinator Steve Wilks has been named the Panthers Interim Head Coach. Wilks has Head Coaching experience in the NFL, although it wasn't a successful stint. He was the Head Coach of the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 and went 3-13, he was fired after that season.
The Panthers also fired Defensive Coordinator Phil Snow and Special Teams Assistant Ed Foley. The Panthers are back in action this weekend, in game 1 of the Wilks Interim Era. They travel to take on defending Super Bowl Champs the L.A. Rams. That game is set for a 4:05 PM (Eastern) kick off on Sunday, you can hear Panthers game this season, on Classic Rock 101.1
