The topic was the center of the public comments part of the meeting. The tension was heavy as those who support saving the speedway packed the meeting and called for the council to preserve the track.
The council passed a resolution recognizing Greenville-Pickens as a historic site. The resolution also urges the current owner to protect the property. The move from council comes after a large weekend rally was held to support saving the track.
The rally brought out several officials including State Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Alan Wilson.
