Slow start offensively looms large in Gamecock Bowl loss

South Carolina Football fell short as the offense got off to a really slow start against 20th ranked Illinois, Tuesday. The Gamecocks scored just 3 points in the 1st half of their 21-17 loss in the Citrus Bowl.

South Carolina trailed 7-3 at the half. The struck 1st in the 2nd half scoring on an TD run from Oscar Adaway III and the Gamecocks took a 10-7 lead. Illinois put a together a long TD drive late in the 3rd quarter and led 14-10 going into the 4th quarter.


South Carolina scored on a LaNorris Sellers TD pass in the 4th to re-take the lead at 17-14. Illinois answered with a TD run from Josh McCray his 2nd of the game to take a 21-17 lead with 7:29 left to play.

The Gamecocks had an opportunity late but their drive stalled and they turned it over on downs at the Illinois 7 yard line. The Illini would then salt the clock away to put away the win.

With the loss South Carolina finishes the season at 9-4 their highest single season win total in the Coach Shane Beamer era.
