(670 The Score) The White Sox placed left-hander Carlos Rodon on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to left shoulder soreness.
Rodon left his start after two innings of work against the Brewers on Monday evening due to the soreness in his throwing shoulder. His velocity had dipped during the game, which the White Sox won 6-4.
The team hopes Rodon's stay on the injured list is a short one, manager Rick Renteria said Tuesday afternoon.
"We are optimistic," Renteria said.
Rodon, 27, was making the second start of his return from Tommy John surgery in May 2019. He underwent further examinations Tuesday, the White Sox said.
Rodon has a 9.53 ERA over 5 2/3 innings of work this season. The No. 4 overall pick in 2014, Rodon is 29-32 with a 4.14 ERA over 92 career starts.
Just two weeks ago, Rodon spoke with great emotion as he discussed his difficult road back from Tommy John surgery.
"I think about this every day," Rodon said. "I've gone through a few things, granted in the sports world; people have gone through a lot more in the real world. But getting hurt is not a thing that anyone wants to do, any athlete. That's not our goal. That's the last thing you think about when you get drafted or you become a professional athlete. But sometimes, it doesn't quite go your way.
"I never had to deal with much adversity growing up. I was fortunate, my parents had provided everything for me. I had a great childhood. Never was really hurt.
"Through my time with the White Sox, we've had a few ups and downs. That's kind of where I had to learn to mature. I think I've grown a lot. It hasn't been easy."
The White Sox have lost three members of their starting rotation this season, with right-hander Michael Kopech opting out of playing in 2020 and right-hander Reynaldo Lopez dealing with right shoulder soreness.
In a corresponding move Tuesday, the White Sox purchased the contract of right-hander Brady Lail from the Schaumburg training facility to fill the roster spot of Rodon. Outfielder Luis Basabe was designated for assignment as well.
The White Sox play the Brewers in Milwaukee on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. CT from Miller Park. Right-hander Lucas Giolito starts for the White Sox.
