As a teenager, Watts learned how to drum by removing the neck of a banjo and propping it up on a stand to play it as a makeshift snare drum. A lover of jazz, he would practice by drumming along to the jazz records in his collection.

Consistently cited as one of the greatest drummers of all time, Watts’ influence has been felt by multiple generations of musicians from across a variety of genres.

As we celebrate the life and legacy of The Rolling Stones drummer, let’s take a look at fellow musicians that are honoring Charlie Watts.

A very sad day. Charlie Watts was the ultimate drummer. The most stylish of men, and such brilliant company. My deepest condolences to Shirley, Seraphina and Charlotte. And of course, The Rolling Stones.
