A police captain in Greenwood has been terminated after being charged with DUI over the weekend. The Greenwood Police Department has announced that 16-year veteran Captain Matt Caughman was fired after he was charged with DUI by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Saturday night.
Caughman was off duty at the time. Early Sunday morning, Greenwood Police Chief T.J. Chaudoin terminated Caughman’s employment. According to a press release, Chief Chaudoin said that, though upset and disappointed, officers are expected to conduct themselves—both on and off duty—in a manner that maintains the trust and confidence of the community.
Caughman had been recognized throughout his career for his service, including being awarded the Medal of Valor and Purple Heart after he was shot in the chest while responding to a domestic violence call.
