It was Mayhem in the Midlands after a suspect died during a hostage crisis. The Sumter County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of two adults being held at gunpoint at a home there, Monday afternoon.
The Sheriff's Office responded and their Emergency Response Team was called to the scene, as was the U.S. Marshals. They were able to help the two hostages, a 45 year old woman and an 87 year old man escape the home. The suspect Anthony Lee Safrit reportedly barricaded himself in a bunker under the garage.
Agents report hearing a shot fired and Safrit was found dead from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. The Sheriff's Office says no law enforcement personnel were injured and SLED has been called into investigate the incident.
