CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Some West Side residents say something must be done about a dangerous street.

“There is not a day that goes by where you don’t see someone that has run into a pylon or the fact that they have run into a building,” said West Side businessman Anthony Waller.

Waller and other West Side residents have been making their case to City Hall that Lake Street, from Laramie to Talman, is a dangerous path, and want  “Truck Clearance Warning Signs” installed and want support columns moved to the sidewalks, like the city has done elsewhere.

“Because of the narrow and low center lane columns that were built in 1896 before vehicles ever ran, hundreds of vehicles have gotten into horrible traffic accidents. There have been horrible fatalities,” said  Roger Romanelli of the Westside Infrastructure Coalition & Fulton Market Association.

West Sider Cynthia Bednarz said things could get even worse.

“Planning to do significant work to I-290 without first repairing  Lake Street isn’t just ignoring the West Side, it’s just bad planning and bad logistics,” Bednarz said.

Waller and other West Side residents have been making their case to City Hall that Lake Street, from Laramie to Talman, is a dangerous path, and want  “Truck Clearance Warning Signs” installed and want support columns moved to the sidewalks, like the city has done elsewhere.

“We need to widen Lake Street because it could do so much for not only just the community but for people that’s going east-west,” Garfield Park resident Perry Starks said.
